Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is a permanent resident visa?

A permanent resident visa confers upon you permanent resident status, which gives the right to live, work or study anywhere in Canada and receive most social benefits, including health care coverage. However, you cannot vote, run for political office, or hold certain jobs that have a high-level security clearance requirement. To maintain permanent resident status you must live in Canada for at least two years within a five-year period. Your permanent resident status may be revoked if you fail to meet the two year residency obligation, or if you are convicted of a serious crime.

2. Who can I include in my application for a permanent resident visa?

You may include your spouse or common-law partner, and your dependent children in your application for a permanent resident visa.

3. Why must I undergo a medical examination?

If you want to immigrate to Canada you and your family must undergo medical examinations. Medical examinations must be carried out by physicians designated by the Government of Canada. If your health poses a danger to Canadians, or would cause excessive demand on the Canadian health care system, your application for a permanent resident visa will not be accepted.

4. What is a security check?

Security checks, also known as police certificates, are copies of your criminal record or a declaration that you do not have a criminal record. They are issued by police authorities or government departments. Permanent resident visa applicants, 18 years of age or older, must obtain police certificates from each country they have lived in for more than six months. If you pose a risk to Canada's security your application for a permanent resident visa will not be accepted.

5. How long does it take to process my application?

Processing times vary from one visa office to another and between different immigration programs. However, ensuring that your application is properly prepared reduces the possibility of any processing delays.

The following immigration programs are eligible for expedited processing:

  •           • Federal Immigrant Investor Program
  •           • Quebec Immigrant Investor Program
  •           • Quebec Skilled Workers (applicants with training in areas that are in high demand)
  •           • Canadian Experience Class (foreign students)
  •           • Quebec Experience Program (foreign students)

6. How much are the processing fees?

Processing fees vary depending on the immigration program and the number of accompanying family members you have and their ages. Once you have decided which immigration program is best for you we will provide you with a breakdown of the applicable processing fees.
