A Brief review of Canadian Citizenship Application

To apply for Canadian Citizenship program, eligible applicants must meet certain requirements. One of these requirements is at least 1095 days physical presence in Canada 4 years prior to the application.

In 2012, the Government of Canada received many applications with false information regarding the period of their physical presence in Canada. Therefore, The Government of Canada introduced new regulations to gain more control over the assessment of applications.

Currently, about 11000 Canadian Citizenship applications from more than 100 countries are under review. Moreover, almost 2000 other applicants have already withdrawn their request after being questioned by government's officials.

At the beginning of this month, a family received a fine of $63000 CAD and were prohibited to apply for Canadian Citizenship because of providing false information about the time spent in Canada.

Determining the amount of time an individual spent in Canada is not always an easy task, therefore based on the new regulation; it is highly recommended to make sure that the applicant satisfies minimum 1095 days of Canadian residency requirement during a period of four years prior signing the application.

Generally, In order to be eligible, Canadian Citizenship applicants should meet the following requirements:

1- To be a Canadian Permanent residency

2- To be at least 18 years old

3- Satisfy the minimum residency requirement of at least 1095 days during the four years prior sending out the application

4- Have minimum required knowledge of English or French

5- Have enough knowledge about Canada and responsibilities of Canadian citizens

6- Did not receive removal order

7- Not to be a security risk to Canada

8- Not to have a Criminal record

9- Attend the ceremony and undertake the Canadian Citizenship Oath.

There are also some exceptions in Canadian Citizenship regulations, which in certain circumstances applicants can be eligible even without physical presence in Canada. An example to such regulations is an employee who is absent on a mission for a Canadian employer or any eligible humanitarian cases and etc. Due to the complication process of such applications with exceptions, they can only be determined by the Citizenship judge.
