Employers are not allowed to ask certain questions during a job interview

Citizenship: Employers cannot ask about your Canadian citizenship, country of birth, or primary language. They can inquire if you are authorized to work in Canada and if you are fluent in a relevant language.

Age: Questions about your age or birthday are not allowed. Employers only need to know if you are of legal working age, typically between 18 and 64.

Health: Employers cannot ask about your weight, height, or health, including disabilities. They should focus on your ability to perform essential job tasks and any necessary accommodations.

Marital and family status: Questions about your marital status, living arrangements, children, or childcare arrangements are inappropriate and may lead to discrimination. You only need to confirm your availability for work.

Religion: Employers should not inquire about your religion, faith, or the need for religious observances. They can ask if you are available to work at specific times or on particular days.

To handle illegal questions, you can politely refuse to answer or inquire about their relevance to the position. Alternatively, you can deflect the question by emphasizing relevant qualifications and experiences.
