Many international students wish to stay in Canada post-graduation to live, work, and eventually become permanent residents. Here are the main options:
Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)
A PGWP allows graduates to work for most employers in Canada for up to three years. Apply within 180 days of getting your final transcript and official letter from your school. Programs under 8 months aren't eligible.
Visitor Records
If your study permit expires before getting a PGWP, apply for a visitor record to stay in Canada. Note, you can't work with a visitor record.
Other Work Permits
You can apply for other work permits through the International Mobility Program (IMP) or the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) to gain work experience for permanent residence.
New Study Permit
Consider pursuing further education. As of January 2024, the living cost requirement is $20,635 for a single student. Second degrees require a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL), but graduate students are exempt and might still get a 3-year PGWP. Apply for the PGWP only after completing your second program.
