Canada recently stopped processing work permit applications for visitors within the country, leaving many to reconsider their options.
As of August 28, 2024, the temporary allowance for visitors to apply for work permits from within Canada has ended. This measure was initially introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic but is no longer available.
As a visitor in Canada, you must leave the country by the expiry date on your visitor record, typically within 183 days of arrival. If you wish to stay longer, you can apply for an extension of your visitor status. Make sure to submit your application at least 30 days before your current status expires.
If your visitor status has already expired, you have a 90-day window to apply for restoration. After this period, you must leave Canada.
Remaining in Canada with lawful visitor status is still possible, but it's important to understand the rules and apply for extensions or restorations on time.
