Federal Immigration Minister Marc Miller has dismissed claims by New Brunswick Premier Blaine Higgs as "largely fictitious." Higgs alleged that Ottawa plans to force New Brunswick to accept 4,600 asylum seekers without providing financial support, a figure much higher than the province currently receives.

Miller clarified that the federal government would not impose asylum seekers on any province without consent or compensation. Both Liberal and Green Party leaders criticized Higgs for using misleading tactics to stir fear and distract from local issues ahead of the provincial election.

Higgs defended his stance, arguing that New Brunswick’s services, including health care and housing, are already under strain due to rapid population growth. He urged Ottawa to ensure asylum claims are legitimate before allowing applicants to stay.
