Canada's Immigration Minister Marc Miller announced reductions in permanent resident targets, dropping from 485,000 in 2024 to 395,000 in 2025, with further decreases through 2027. While these cuts have sparked concern nationwide, Newfoundland and Labrador may experience a softer impact.
Provincial Immigration Minister Sarah Stoodley stressed the importance of maintaining or even increasing the province's allocation of over 3,000 jobs-based immigration spots, which are vital for local growth. However, Miller noted that Newfoundland has historically underused these spots, suggesting the cuts might not significantly impact the province.
Miller expressed readiness to collaborate with Newfoundland and Labrador to meet its needs, aiming for a more tailored approach to support the province's economic stability amid federal reductions.
