The federal government is requesting a three-month extension to the December 19 deadline for passing a bill to restore citizenship rights to "lost Canadians," Immigration Minister Marc Miller announced.
This group includes those affected by a 2009 law preventing Canadian parents born abroad from passing citizenship to children unless born in Canada. Declared unconstitutional last year, the bill to fix this remains stalled in Parliament due to ongoing debates.
The proposed legislation would restore citizenship automatically and introduce new rules for passing citizenship to children born or adopted abroad.
