Thinking About Spousal Sponsorship? Here’s What You Should Know

One of the biggest things to consider before sponsoring your spouse or partner for Canadian permanent residency is the financial responsibility. Sponsorship isn’t just about bringing your loved one to Canada—it’s a legal commitment to support them for three years. Even if your relationship ends, you’re still responsible, and if they ever need government assistance, you’ll have to repay it.

Another key point is choosing between inland and outland sponsorship. If your partner is already in Canada, they can apply inland and may qualify for an open work permit, but they must stay in the country while waiting. If they’re applying from outside Canada, outland sponsorship allows for travel, and the process is usually faster (10 months vs. 28 months).

For those in Quebec, extra steps apply. You’ll need approval from the province, including an income assessment, and there’s a cap on family sponsorship applications until June 2026. If that cap is reached, applications won’t be processed, so timing is everything.

Lastly, not everyone can sponsor. If you were sponsored as a spouse in the last five years, have unpaid debts, or a criminal record, you might not qualify. Checking eligibility early can save you time, money, and frustration.
