Interest in Canadian citizenship is rising among Americans after Canada passed Bill C-3 on November 21, 2025.

The new law removes the strict first-generation limit and replaces it with a more flexible system based on substantial connection to Canada. This makes it easier for people with Canadian parents or grandparents living in the United States to claim or pass on citizenship.

Although the bill is not yet in force, it will soon recognize many people as citizens if they were previously excluded under old rules. Future children born abroad will also qualify if their Canadian parent was born or naturalized in Canada or can show about 1,095 days of physical presence.

The shift has created renewed interest among Americans with Canadian heritage, dual-country families and those looking to secure long-term options in Canada.
