International students hoping to remain in Canada on a Post-Graduation Work Permit now have six months to apply once they obtain their notice of graduation and are no longer required to have a valid study permit.

CIC has announced the creation of a new Federal Skilled Worker category for international students studying towards a PhD in Canada. To qualify, applicants must have completed at least 2 years of study towards a PhD, or graduated from a Canadian PhD program within the past 12 months. A maximum of 1,000 applications from this category will be considered for processing each year by CIC. The first cap year for the PhD stream begins on November 5, 2011.

Foreign Graduates who have completed their studies in Canada and wish to apply for a post Graduation work permit can now submit their application online if their country of residence is not Canada.

The Federal court of Canada has ordered the citizenship and immigration Canada to reconsider post graduate work permit application for foreign students who are taking online courses with Canadian educational institutions. These foreign students although graduate from Canadian educational institution are not eligible to apply for post graduate work permit.

In December 2015 there were 353,000 international students with a valid study permit in Canada, up from 84,000 in December 1995. Of the international students admitted to Canada in the early 2000s, 25% became permanent residents over the 10 years that followed. Of these, nearly one-half applied as principal applicants in the economic class.

Canada's Immigration Ministry is warning of a scam targeting international students in Ottawa and London, Ontario. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) says a number of students in these and other Canadian cities have reported receiving calls from an individual who says they are an IRCC officer and tells the students they are the subject of an immigration investigation, or have been charged with a crime in their home country. The students are then ordered to provide personal financial information or send prepaid credit and gift cards, money wires or e-transfers in order to avoid deportation.

EDMONTON - International students in Alberta are seeing wait times for processing their study permits soar to nearly three months, leaving many “stranded” in Canada, unable to visit their home countries or travel elsewhere in the world. Students can’t leave the country without renewing their permits and visas without risking lengthy delays upon re-entry, jeopardizing their standing in university programs where many have studied for several years.
